The diving response in mammals

Every weekend in May at 2:00 PM

You may not know this, but all mammals are actually adapted to be good divers – or more precisely, free divers – meaning without the use of diving equipment. Our bodies have a diving reflex that helps preserve oxygen while underwater. The mammals that are best at free diving are marine mammals. We’ve studied this in various research projects together with our seals and porpoises. But humans are actually quite good at it too. In fact, some people are so talented that it almost seems like they belong in the ocean – just like a mermaid.
