Seal Pups Up Close – Every Sunday in the Summer Holiday

The diving response in mammals

Presentation on Seal Pups by the Seals Every Sunday at 2:00 PM During the Summer Holiday (June 28 – August 10)

This summer, you can experience seal pups at Fjord&Bælt. Every Sunday at 2:00 PM, our nature guides invite you to a presentation by the basin, where you can see the spotted seal pups and learn about their early life.

During the presentation, you can touch various artifacts, including samples of seal fur, and gain insight into the development of seal pups – from the nursing period, which lasts about 4 weeks, until they start eating fish on their own. We also discuss why many animal young are born in the summer, while humans have children year-round.

Denmark has two seal species: the harbor seal and the gray seal. The harbor seals, which you can meet here, give birth to their young in the summer. These pups are born with a thin, short fur and are ready to swim shortly after birth. Gray seal pups, on the other hand, are born in the winter with a thick, white lanugo fur that is not waterproof. Therefore, they must stay on land for 2-4 weeks until they shed this fur and get a waterproof adult fur.

The presentation on seal pups is adapted to the development of the seal pups, so there is something new to experience every week.

We promise it will be both cute and nerdy. See you by the seals.
